(Lincoln, NE) – One person is dead and several others injured in a van-semi crash on Interstate-80, two miles west of Hershey, Nebraska, Tuesday, October 26, 2004. The Nebraska State Patrol reports the 1992 Dodge van with Arizona plates was eastbound on I-80 around 6:30 p.m., Tuesday night, when it blew a tire. The driver of the van lost control of the vehicle. An eastbound semi trailer truck then struck the van from behind causing it to roll in the median.
Killed in the crash was 20-year-old Luis Perez Jimenez of Oaxoa, Mexico. Jimenez was a back seat passenger in the van. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Eight other people in the van were taken to Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte. Names and extent of injuries were not available.
The driver of the van fled the scene. Authorities are looking for a Hispanic male, 175 pounds. At the time of the crash, he was wearing a brown shirt. The driver of the semi, 51-year-old John Clark of Liberty, Illinois was not injured.
The fatality and injured were all reported to be undocumented workers. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents assisted the Nebraska State Patrol with the crash investigation.
