Shoemaker Proposes Plan to Strengthen Southwest Nebraska Families

McCook – Frank Shoemaker, 44th District candidate for the Nebraska Legislature, has proposed a plan to strengthen Nebraska’s families. Shoemaker’s plan is based upon preventing the spread of methamphetamine, improving schools and cutting taxes for families and seniors.

To address the methamphetamine problem, Shoemaker advocates committing more technology and human resources to stop the spread of the drug as well as improving programs to educate and rehabilitate users. Shoemaker also supports tougher penalties for dealers.

The improvement of schools, according to the Shoemaker plan, can be achieved through adequate funding and improved use of technology, ensuring that students in rural Nebraska receive the same opportunities as children in Lincoln and Omaha. Shoemaker also opposes forced consolidation.

Noting that Nebraska’s property taxes are among the highest in the nation, and that high property taxes make it difficult for families to build futures in rural Nebraska, Shoemaker has proposed a plan to cut property taxes. The plan includes property tax rebates, increasing the homestead exemption and changing the state aid to education formula.

Shoemaker said, “Strong families are the foundation of our communities and our state, and I’m proud of our values and way of life.”

At Thursday night’s candidate’s forum in McCook, Shoemaker also expressed his support for prohibitions against abortion, emphasizing a need to spend time with young people to discuss the importance of avoiding unplanned pregnancies. Of the seven candidates running in the 44th district, Shoemaker was the only contender to receive a question about abortion.

Frank Shoemaker is a practicing attorney and farmer who was born in Cambridge, Nebraska, attended Cambridge Public High School and graduated in 1967. In 1971, Shoemaker graduated from Doane College, Crete, Nebraska with a Bachelor of Arts in History and was a member of the United States Peace Corps from 1971 to 1973, living in Ecuador, South America. Shoemaker graduated with a Juris Doctorate from the University of Nebraska College of Law in 1978 and sits on the board of directors for Pinpoint Communications in Cambridge, Nebraska. Shoemaker is seeking election to the legislature in the 44th district on a platform that emphasizes the importance of quality education, quality healthcare and a reasonable system of taxation.
