Today, Frank Shoemaker, the 44th District Candidate for the Nebraska Legislature, commented on the protest that took place earlier this week at the funeral of Nebraska native Jeff Hansen, who died in Iraq.
“It is personally and morally upsetting to me that a hate group attempts to use a sacred time to push their fear on other people. I believe very strongly that protests at military funerals by groups acting only out of fear and anger is unacceptable behavior.
“Those who have fallen in the service of their country are our children, they are our family, they are our friends and their friends and families have the right to mourn in a setting of dignity and respect.
“I applaud the last session’s passage of LB 287, but I will introduce legislation in the Unicameral to further prevent fringe groups from interfering with military funerals in Nebraska, to increase penalties and put more teeth in the law. If these people cannot be personally responsible for their actions, the State has a responsibility to step in and allow our citizens to pay their respects in accordance with their beliefs they believe.”
Frank Shoemaker is a practicing attorney and farmer who was born in Cambridge, Nebraska, attended Cambridge Public High School and graduated in 1967. In 1971, Shoemaker graduated from Doane College, Crete, Nebraska with a Bachelor of Arts in History and was a member of the United States Peace Corps from 1971 to 1973, living in Ecuador, South America.
