The District II Birding Day is part of the Commission’s annual series that allows the public, Commission staff and agency partners to mingle and enjoy the outdoors and Nebraska’s avian wildlife. Experienced guides will provide tips and help identify birds.
The birding group will meet at the Valentine Fish Hatchery, on the northeast edge of Valentine, and leave at 6 a.m. for Anderson Bridge. Birds will be counted and identified until 11 a.m.
The group will return to the hatchery for a lunch provided by the Commission, then visit Government Canyon, where participants may observe changes brought on by last summer’s wildfire and record birds using that area.
Participants who wish may meet and stay at the Valentine Fish Hatchery bunkhouse on May 29. They should contact the Commission’s Ben Rutten at (402) 684-2921 or ben.rutten@ngpc.ne.gov. They should bring meat and salad for a barbecue and equipment if interested in trout fishing.
Future district birding days are: June 4, Macon Lakes (Franklin County); June 6, Wapiti and Cedar Valley WMAs (Lincoln County); June 7, Dead Timber SRA and Powderhorn WMA (Dodge County); and June 13, Buffalo Creek WMA and Wildcat Hills SRA (Scotts Bluff and Banner counties).
